Families in the Park

This is an opportunity for Rosa Parks, Central, Wilson, and Clark families to visit SITP to learn about the activities their children experience. The visits to Balboa Park help expand parents’ understanding of the SITP program and the wider educational resources available to them within the participating Balboa Park museums. Families will be notified when they are invited to come to the Park.

Program Information

  • Caregivers are welcome at any time. Check with your child’s teacher if you would like to ride the bus and spend the day. Also, we have a Families in the Park program; check with the parent volunteer coordinator at Rosa Parks for more information.

There are SITP name-tags available in the parent rooms for checkout. One tag will admit one parent and one child to several museums

  • Students will go to school as usual on the days they come to the Park and receive instruction from their teachers during the morning. The bus will pick up students and teachers at 11:30 am and bring them to SITP.

The museum program is from 12:00 to 4:00 every day. At 2:00 Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, teachers will return to Rosa Parks while students remain for the extended portion of the day. On Wednesdays, because this is minimum day, teachers will remain at Rosa Parks. Buses will bring the students back to Rosa Parks at 4:25 pm every day. There will be a SITP facilitator on the bus with each class to help supervise the ride to and from SITP.

Parents should make sure that their child knows whether to go to Prime Time or wait for a parent or adult designee to pick them up. No student will be allowed to walk home alone or with a friend. A parent or designee must pick up the student. Please make sure your child knows his or her phone number and address. If there is no one to pick up students by 5:00 pm, the School

Police will be notified to help in locating the parents.

A SITP staff member will wait with the children until parents arrive.

  • Students will go to school as usual on the days they come to the Park. The bus will pick up at the school at 8:55 am and bring students to SITP.

Our program is from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday with 30 minutes for lunch. Students will arrive back at Wilson by 3:30 pm. On Thursdays, the museum educators will go to Wilson to provide additional instruction.

  • If you need to pick up your child from the Park, please go to the school first and sign your child out at the office.

    Please have photo identification.

If you have any questions, please call our office at: 619-232-3655 or cell: 619-572-6518

  • The San Diego Unified School District provides a healthy lunch and milk for every child along with a healthy snack. You may send a lunch from home. Students may bring a water bottle.

Please do not send: soda, gum, candy, ‘flaming hot’ chips, or any other item not allowed at school.

If your child needs a special lunch, let the school nurse know as soon as possible.

  • Students should wear comfortable shoes that completely cover their feet (no sandals or flip-flops). If uniforms are required at your school, they are required at School in the Park also. Otherwise, wear clothing that is appropriate for school.

Check the weather and bring a jacket/sweater, hat and/or sunglasses. Wear sunscreen!

  • Money, candy, gum, toys. Check with the classroom teacher to see if cameras are allowed.

Cell phones are not necessary at the Park. If a student does bring one, they must be kept turned off. We recommend informing the classroom teacher and SITP staff that your child has a cell phone.

Questions to ask your child about School in the Park

What was the best part of your day at SITP? and why?

Avoid asking general and vague questions like “How was School in the park?” Students will like give a word word answer, such as good or fine. Instead, be more specific and try to get them to remember the parts of the day they enjoyed most to spark a conversation.

What was fun that you did today at SITP? Give me two examples.

If this question gets the child talking, try following up with another question like “What was difficult today? Give me at least one example”. This will help your child reflect on a specific challenge that you may be able to help them with.

Tell me something else you would have wanted to learn at (name of museum).

Asking your child a question like this can help you identify their interests and can spark a conversation about potential careers your child may be interested in exploring.

Can you draw a picture of something you learned about?

Some students may have difficulties writing. If so, you can always ask them to draw a picture that may give you some ideas about follow-up questions you can ask.
