Our Mission:

Cultivating curiosity, competence, confidence and character in City Heights’ students through experiential learning opportunities within Balboa Park’s dynamic cultural institutions.

About School in the Park

  • School in the Park is a multi-visit museum program that blends formal and informal learning by utilizing the rich resources of museums and educational institutions in Balboa Park, San Diego, California.

The program is designed with standards-based curriculum to integrate what is learned at school with authentic learning connections from the Park institutions.

School in the Park significantly alters the “normal” educational setting and methodologies for students and teachers by moving “school” into the larger community.

  • School in the Park is a program designed to support and enhance student learning and achievement for select City Heights Elementary and Middle Schools.

The program provides enriching, authentic learning experiences for students, and a gateway to the broader culture through the resources at Balboa Park.

  • School in the Park is a collaborative partnership between the San Diego Unified School District, San Diego State University and Price Philanthropies Foundation. Currently, School in the Park serves four schools from the City Heights area in San Diego. Rosa Parks Elementary School, Central Elementary School, Wilson Middle School, and Clark Middle School.

In addition to these schools, SITP also collaborates with the following institutions:

    • The San Diego History Center

    • The San Diego Junior Theatre

    • The Old Globe

    • The San Diego Natural History Museum (theNAT)

    • The Museum of Us

    • The San Diego Air & Space Museum

    • The Mingei International Museum

    • The San Diego Zoo

    • The Comic-con Museum

    • Fleet Science Center

  • As an integral part of their school year, 3rd-6th grade students from Rosa Parks Elementary, Central Elementary Wilson Middle School, and Clark Middle School spend multiple weeks learning in a stimulating environment of museum galleries and Zoo exhibits.

Museum educators, working with classroom teachers and facilitators, provide instruction by using the resources of the various Balboa Park institutions.

Students build a foundation of knowledge and a context for learning by participating in this blend of formal and informal, experiential learning across these institutions.

Teachers continue using these experiences throughout the year as they bridge the content with learning back at the school site.
